What this category covers

What compensation and benefits solutions do

Benefits platforms make fringe benefits manageable: benefit cards and vouchers, meal allowances, bike leasing, mobility budgets, occupational pensions or discount portals. Employees choose and use their benefits in an app, HR controls budgets and eligibility, and the data is passed on to payroll in a usable form.

Compensation management software, by contrast, supports salary bands, market benchmarking, pay review cycles and bonus processes. Pay equity analyses are gaining weight as pay transparency requirements increase across Europe. Some solutions give employees a personal overview of their total compensation.

What to look for in benefits and compensation tools

Each field has its own requirements; what they share is their closeness to tax and payroll matters:

  • Scope: a single benefit or a platform with several building blocks; for compensation: benchmarking, band structures, planning cycles.
  • Tax treatment: correct handling of benefits in kind under German rules and clear records for payroll accounting.
  • Integrations: interfaces to payroll and the core HR system so that data is not maintained twice.
  • Data basis: origin, freshness and DACH coverage of the market data used for salary comparisons.
  • Cost and effort: fee per employee, minimum terms, administrative effort for HR and support for employees.

Compensation & Benefits, Payroll or Health & Wellbeing?

Payroll calculates wages and salaries; benefits and pay decisions provide the inputs. Offers such as corporate fitness or psychological counselling are listed under Health & Wellbeing, even when they are granted as a benefit. Analyses that go beyond pay belong to People Analytics.
