What this category covers

What sourcing tools do

Sourcing tools search professional networks, CV databases and publicly available profiles and bring the results together in one interface. Searches can be narrowed by skills, experience and location; many products suggest suitable profiles through matching.

They also support outreach – message templates, multi-step sequences, reply tracking – and provide talent pools or a candidate CRM in which contacts are maintained over a longer period. Some listings are services in which an external team takes over the search and the first approach.

What to look for in sourcing tools

What matters most is whether a solution actually reaches the profiles being sought. These points should be checked:

  • Data sources: which sources are searched, how current are the profiles, and how well is the DACH region covered?
  • Scope: search only, or also outreach, pool management and analysis of response rates?
  • Integrations: handover of contacts to the ATS and mailbox without duplicates or manual re-entry.
  • Data protection: the legal basis for storing profiles, information duties, deletion routines and hosting – particularly for data from third-party sources.
  • Pricing: licence per user, contact quotas, or fees for sourcing services.

Sourcing, Recruiting or Jobboard?

Sourcing approaches talent directly, whereas a Jobboard relies on incoming applications. Recruiting lists tools for selection and assessment that come into play after first contact. The ATS then manages the process; many sourcing tools pass their contacts on to it. Employer brand and recruitment marketing are found under Talent Acquisition & Employer Branding.
